Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationships between Internet use, thin-ideal media exposure, body image and unhealthy weight control behaviors among junior high school students. Participants were seventh to ninth grade students in Taipei City and Yilan County. A total of 1569 students completed a self-administrated questionnaire in 2013. The results were as follows. 1. About 20% of students visited extreme weight loss websites in the past year, while 35% of students reported unhealthy weight control behaviors. 2. The time students spend on the Internet, social networks, and online audio/video streaming were significantly correlated with thin-ideal media exposure. 3. Students’ thin-ideal media exposure was correlated with body weight concern and body dissatisfaction. 4. Multiple regression analysis showed that students who were female, obese, exposed to thin media images, used social media frequently, visited extreme weight loss websites and had greater weight concern and body dissatisfaction were more likely to have unhealthy weight control behaviors.
