Abstract

This study investigates the support provided by the e-journal collection of a national university of science and technology in Taiwan for academic research related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Utilizing citation analysis, the research examines the publication characteristics of SDG-themed academic literature authored by the faculty and staff of the university, as well as their cited references. Finally, it analyzes the extent to which the library's e-journal collection supports SDG-related academic research, with the findings intended to serve as a reference for the library's development and evaluation of SDG-related journal collections. A total of 2,906 SDG-themed academic papers authored by the university's faculty and staff, along with 94,884 of their cited references, were collected for this study. After analyzing their bibliographic characteristics, including SDG goals, publication year, language, and document type, Bradford's Lawwas applied to identify highly productive and highly cited core journals. These core journals were then cross-referenced with the library's e-journal holdings to assess the collection's support for SDG-themed research. The study's findings indicate that the most frequently addressed SDGs by the university's faculty and staff are SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). The publications are predominantly English-language, non-open access journal articles. The most prolific journal and publisher are Sustainability and Elsevier, respectively. Citedreferences primarily consist of English-language journal articles published within the last decade. The most cited journal and publisher are ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces and Elsevier, respectively. Regarding collection support, the library's holdings covered over 90% of the journals in which SDG-related articles were published and over 80% of the journals cited by those articles. For the core journals with high publication and citation counts, the collection support rate reached 100%. Based on these findings, this study aims to offer recommendations for the library's e-journal collection development direction and proposes the identified list of core journals as a reference for building an SDG-themed collection.
