Abstract

The decorative use of text has existed since ancient times. Beginning with the symbol carvings on Neolithic pottery, created with decorative intent, humans have long held the concept of transforming text into visual patterns for adorning objects or enhancing environments. This study first explores the historical development and applications of decorative text through a review of literature, examining how writing has been integrated with visual motifs across different eras. It identifies the cultural characteristics and aesthetic concepts associated with text decoration in various periods.Subsequently, the study collects and analyzes examples of decorative lettering from both Eastern and Western traditions. It categorizes the decorative techniques used in Chinese characters and Latin letters, and applies these insights to the creation of Chinese decorative lettering. Through content analysis, the study classifies Chinese decorative lettering techniques into four categories:"character formation through imagery," "partial patterning," "geometric stylization," and "surrounding decoration." Western decorative lettering techniques are categorized into four types: "stroke embellishment," "integration of image and text," "overlapping and interweaving," and "modular composition."The study concludes that decorative lettering is an artistic form of writing enhanced through ornamentation, capable of beautifying spaces. Through the transformation and recombination of visual language, text becomes a medium for conveying ideas. Based on a review of literature on urban imagery, the study identifies five key elements that express the unique characteristics of Taiwanese cities: landmarks, natural landscapes, traditional festivals, food culture, and municipal flowers. By incorporating traditional Taiwanese tile patterns as design elements for shaping Chinese characters, the study experiments with the creation of twelve Taiwanese city-themed Chinese character posters. It aims to reignite contemporary interest in the culture of Taiwanese decorative tiles through the design transformation of tile motifs and local imagery.
