Abstract
Having Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner as representatives, the “New German School’ had promoted renovations of several new genres in the mid-19th century Europe, and among them is German composer Felix Draeseke (7 October 1835-26 February 1913).This dissertation focuses on Draeseke’s Clarinet Sonata in B-Flat, Op. 35, composed in 1887. The author has discovered a huge number of combinations of different materials, multiple recapitulations of the motif, the close relationships between clarinet and piano, and dramatic phenomenon switching during analyzing its harmony and further researching into this piece, which nonetheless sticks to conservative Romanticism. There are four chapters in this dissertation. The first one narrates purpose, range, and researching method of this dissertation. The second one is about the information and background of the composer. The third one digs deeper into the piece and focuses on structure, harmony, and the author’s interpretations. In the last chapter, there will be a conclusion wrapping all the contents above up. Expected is that via in-depth studying, there could be more possibilities and sensitivity for interpreting more similarly to how this piece should have been like in Draeseke’s era.
