Abstract
In 2020, Story Factory obtained a 10-year theater adaptation license for the social realism drama"The World Between Us," adapting it into a participatory theater version focused on public referendum. This adaptation breaks the traditional audience-performer relationship by using audience participation to vote on the outcome of the story. Audiences are also encouraged to express their opinions on the issues presented and engage in direct conversations with experts and scholars. From 2020 to 2023, this play was performed 42 times in various venues across Taiwan, achieving nearly sold-out shows each time and sparking ongoing discussions on public issues online. The research question of this thesis explores how to connect the audience with social issues, how participatory theater can create a space for dialogue, and how participatory theater can bridge relationships with society and construct its public relevance. This research is a qualitative study that adopts semi-structured in-depth interviews. By interviewing Lin Jia-Feng, the producer, and Huang Zhi-Kai, the director and playwright of Story Factory's participatory theater version of "The World Between Us," first-hand data was obtained. By referencing existing literature, this study concludes with three findings: 1.Social simulation can connect the audience with social issues. 2.Tangible and intangible media can be used to create a space for audience dialogue. 3.Promoting audience discussion and attention to public issues enhances the social value and impact of theater.
