Abstract
This study investigates the emergence, dissemination, and impact of “cheerleading girl culture” within Taiwan’s professional baseball league (CPBL). Using qualitative in-depth interviews and grounded theory, the research gathers perspectives from fans, media professionals, and marketing staff to examine how cheerleaders have transformed from supportive figures into key visual and commercial icons of the sport.Findings reveal that cheerleading culture significantly enhances the entertainment value of games, strengthens team branding, and fosters fan engagement through visual pleasure and emotional connection. With the rise of digital and social media, cheerleaders have become influential IPs, driving ticket sales and merchandise consumption. However, the study also addresses critical concerns, such as the objectification of women, gender stereotypes, and commercial pressures resulting from this phenomenon.Drawing from feminist theory and the concept of the male gaze, the research outlines how cheerleading culture operates within Taiwan’s sports marketing system and popular culture. It offers reflections on balancing commercial appeal with gender representation, aiming to support more ethical and sustainable development of this cultural trend.
