Abstract
In Taiwan, the importance of gender equality has been increasingly recognized over the years. This study examines the gender role framework and the significance of gender equality through the lens of social dance. Traditionally, in social dance, men typically assume the role of Leader, while women take on the role of Follower. However, recent developments in various social dance communities have begun to challenge this framework, with instances of role reversals between Leaders and Followers. This research aims to analyze how dancers demonstrate gender equality through their dance movements and expressions, explore differences in gender equality perspectives within dance partnerships, and examine the gender equality viewpoints of dancers who engage in role reversals. The research methodology employs qualitative methods, specifically semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Through interviews, participants were able to fully articulate their dance experiences and feelings, with the process recorded for subsequent analysis. The participants of this study are distinguished dancers from various dance genres, including ballroom, swing, and salsa. The participants emphasized that their biological gender should not be the sole determinant of their dancing abilities and performance styles. The internal expressions of the dancers reflect their reflections on gender role frameworks and the diversity of their performances. Within dance partnerships, the concept of gender equality is also evident, challenging traditional gender role stereotypes. In terms of dance attire, traditional gender roles and their stereotypical influences are reflected. Efforts to break these frameworks involve not just aesthetics, but also enhancing the performers' confidence and comfort. The study also proposes a redefinition of dance roles, using the terms Initiator and Participator to describe roles in social dance, thus overcoming the inherent power imbalance in the traditional Leader-Follower dynamic. This research highlights that role reversals in performances and teaching further emphasize and affirm the concept of gender equality and self-expression. These concepts are not only significant within the realm of dance but are also worthy of promotion and advocacy in other fields. The study aims to enhance understanding and practice of gender equality, thereby fostering greater societal awareness and emphasis on this important issue.
