Abstract

This study utilizes bibliometric analysis to examine the characteristics of research literature and authorship in the journal" Chinese Studies " from 2011 to 2022. The data for analysis were from the " Database of Center for Chinese Studies Publications " which is established by the National Central Library. A total of 721 literature references were downloaded, and after excluding advertisements, indexes, writing formats, agreements, book reviews, and non-research sections, 442 research articles remained for analysis. These articles involved 1,898 author keywords. The analysis focused on the distribution of author nationalities and collaboration, keyword clustering, and the distribution of research topics to identify recent trends in"Chinese Studies." The study results are as follows: 1. Author characteristics in "Chinese Studies": The majority of authors were from Taiwan, accounting for 67.7% of the total research literature with 305 individuals. The highest number of overseas authors was from the United States, comprising 2.4%. The author divided time period into 4 years (2011-2014, 2015-2019..etc.),, there has been a decreasing trend in the number of submissions and participating countries from overseas regions, indicating that "Chinese Studies" may receive less attention from the international sinology community compared to the past. The primary language of publication was Chinese, with 424 articles, accounting for 95.9% of the total research literature. Most research articles in "Chinese Studies" had single authors (428 articles, 96.8%), indicating a preference for solo authorship. Collaborative research was less common, and authors tended to collaborate with scholars from the same country and language background. 2. Literature characteristics in "Chinese Studies": The keyword analysis revealed a focus on the field of Chinese philosophy, with "Qing" and "Zhu Xi" being the most frequent keywords, appearing 20 and 18 times, respectively. The most popular research topics were in the "literature" category, with 95 articles, accounting for 21.5% of the total research literature. The subsequent categories were "history," "philosophy," and "linguistics." The research topics in "Chinese Studies" predominantly concentrated on the"culture, history, and philosophy" field, and the journal's special issues indeed influenced the research trends in this field. Chinese sinology research topics had a steady number of publications each year, with 420 articles, comprising 95% of the total research literature. However, research topics related to Taiwan sinology showed a declining trend, suggesting that the "Taiwan-centric" policy did not significantly affect the research direction of authors in "Chinese Studies." Based on the study results, the following recommendations are proposed:1. Recommendations for the publishing community in Chinese studies: Consider implementing relevant incentive systems to encourage scholars from overseas to submit articles to"Chinese Studies" and increase its international visibility, particularly in the competitive landscape of sinology research between Taiwan and mainland China. 2. Recommendations for the field of Chinese studies and researchers: Explore and investigate other areas within Chinese studies that have received less attention, such as art and geographical gazetteers. Encourage researchers in Chinese studies to pursue diverse and interdisciplinary research topics to enrich the variety of submissions to"Chinese Studies." Future research can expand the scope of analysis for "Chinese Studies" and conduct comparisons with other Taiwanese sinology journals. Additionally, researching the citation characteristics of the journal's articles would provide insights into the research landscape and citation patterns in various fields.
