Abstract
This study explores the social rehabilitation experiences of juvenile delinquents, with a particular focus on the life contexts they encountered during reintegration, the resources they accessed, and their personal growth and transformation. The aim is to provide practical insights and recommendations for professionals working with youth. Employing a qualitative research, the study conducts in-depth interviews with six individuals who were formerly juvenile delinquents and are now adults who have successfully reintegrated into society. It examines how trauma, family dysfunction, and other developmental factors influenced their behaviors and shaped their rehabilitation journeys. The conclusions of this study are as follows:1.Behavior is shaped by developmental contexts: Traumatic experiences and family dysfunction during childhood and early adolescence were significant contributors to the emergence of deviant behaviors. 2.Behavior reflects external expressions of internal trauma: The offenses committed by juvenile delinquents often stemmed from feelings of powerlessness and unmet emotional needs. These behaviors were typically stress responses rather than acts of intentional harm. 3. Authentic and stable professional relationships are critical to reintegration: Participants consistently emphasized that the genuine care and support provided by social workers, teachers, probation officers, and institutional staff offered vital opportunities for self-reflection and behavioral transformation. 4.Repairing family relationships facilitates successfully social rehabilitation: Continued family involvement, open communication, and emotional support from significant others enhanced the capacity of family systems to serve as a reliable support network for youth reentering society. 5.Disengaging from harmful peer relationships reduces recidivism risk: Through increased self-awareness, interviewees gradually established boundaries, distanced themselves from negative influences, and actively sought out positive support systems to prevent reoffending. The recommendations derived from this research are as follows: 1.Emphasize the value of authentic accompaniment: The consistent and sincere presence of helping professionals is a critical factor in supporting juvenile offenders’ successful reintegration into society. 2.Extend service hours and enhance professional staffing: Services should be adapted to align with the lifestyle patterns of youth, particularly those who are more active during nighttime hours and rest during the day. 3.Develop integrated, multi-disciplinary “one-stop youth service centers”: These centers should offer comprehensive support by consolidating various services, such as counseling, education, legal aid, and vocational training, into a single, accessible location. 4.Ensure rehabilitation reflects real-life experiences and technology use: Programs should incorporate everyday life skills and realistic technology engagement to better prepare youth for reintegration. 5.Promote de-labeling and trauma-informed care: Efforts should be made to eliminate stigmatizing language and concepts, reduce negative societal perceptions, and enhance understanding and application of trauma-informed practices among professionals.
