Abstract
Erhu, a quintessential instrument in Chinese classical music, and the Nanguan erxian, both belonging to the family of bowed string instruments, exhibit distinct aesthetic qualities. Inspired by author’s musical journey and fueled by a curiosity about the playing techniques and transformative possibilities inherent in these instruments, I commissioned the esteemed Taiwanese composer, Mr. Yi-Hsiu Yang, to craft the composition"Moon Over You" placing the erhu and Nanguan erxian at its core. Acknowledging the historical role of the Nanguan erxian as a supporting instrument in Nanguan music, this study endeavors to facilitate a compelling dialogue between Nanguan music and erhu through the composition, interpretation, and exploration of "Moon Over You", thereby expanding the horizons of Nanguan erxian performance. "Moon Over You" draws predominantly from Nanguan elements as its creative foundation. The composer seamlessly weaves together diverse musical influences, including Chinese pop, Chinese traditional music, and Western classical music. This thesis not only delves into the incorporation of Nanguan elements but also dissects the intricate amalgamation of various musical elements. Moreover, within the interpretative segments of the composition, the thesis aims to articulate the author's nuanced perceptions and aesthetic concepts regarding these two bowed string instruments. In " Moon Over You", ample space is provided for the expression of Nanguan musical elements within this cross-genre piece. Mr. Yi-Hsiu Yang ingeniously elevates the traditionally supportive roles of Nanguan erxian and Nanguan sanxian to indispensable components in "Moon Over You" , allowing them to shine with their distinctive musicality. Moreover, by delving into the composition and interpretation of "Moon Over You", and intertwining this exploration with the analytical insights presented in this thesis, the overarching objective of this research is to nurture the distinctive musical qualities inherent in the erhu and Nanguan erxian. This involves harnessing their expansive performance potential and facilitating a more profound collaboration between the realms of Nanguan and erhu. In doing so, the musical landscape of Nanguan erxian can be enhanced and diversified.
