Abstract
The study aims to investigate adult English learners’ characteristics, learning strategies and preference in English teaching styles of the community colleges in Taipei. The study adopts qualitative research approach. The techniques of in-depth interview, participant observation and document analysis are used to collect data. Four English courses of different community colleges in Taipei are selected, and two adult learners from each English course are interviewed. The main findings of the study are as follows: 1.The characteristics of Community colleges are not the main factor for adult English learners to choose English courses. 2.Most of the English courses in Community colleges belong to “Art and Life curriculum” , and most of the learners are career women. 3.Adult English learners in community colleges highlight the characteristic of self-directed learning of adult learners. 4.Adult English learners use multiple language learning strategies actively, but they are not familiar with metacognitive strategy. 5.Adult English learners in community colleges prefer task-oriented and experiential teaching methods and collaboratory teaching style. Recommendations based on the above findings are as follows: 1.For Community colleges: (1) to highlight the characteristic of promoting civil society in English courses; (2) to promote diverse English curricula. 2.For English teachers in Community colleges; (1) to realize adult English learners’ characteristics and adopt appropriate methods; (2) to assist adult English learners in expanding their language learning strategies; (3) to integrate the characteristics of community college into English teaching. 3.For English learners in Community colleges: (1) to choose appropriate English course and to develop learning strategies; (2) to understand the multiple dimensions of foreign language learning. 4.For future studies: (1) to expand different aspects of adult English teaching and learning; (2) to adopt large samples of community colleges in different area, and to adopt both qualitative and quantitative research approaches.
