Abstract
This study explores how to create animation music videos using the principles of narratology - the narrative theories developed within the frameworks of structuralism and Russian formalism, as well as the story structures based on Propp's formula that have been widely applied in various narrative contexts. The paper first examines the background of music video development, relevant theories, and the production process, as well as the scientific thinking of narratology and structuralism from the literature. Taking this literature-based knowledge as the core, the study then employs content analysis to examine the structures of award-winning best music videos, including "Cheers", " Gypsy In Memory", "Chai", "Left Behind", "Slow/Oriental", and "LOVE". Finally, the study combines expert interviews to inform the creative process of animation music video production. The results show that existing story structure models, such as the V-shaped, N-shaped, and W-shaped structures based on Propp's formula, as well as the analytical findings of this study, can be referenced when creating animation music videos. Applying the principles of narratology can provide an effective framework to enhance the creative process and efficiency. Furthermore, this study designs an innovative creation method that organically integrates the visual narrative and the song, forming a graphical creative workflow, which provides more reference options for creators in related fields. This research provides a theoretical foundation and practical guidance for the narrative creation of animation music videos, with the hope of promoting continuous innovation in the field.
