Abstract
In our current society, scientific technology is highly developed; material comforts are greatly advanced; the influence of religion has been diminished; class distinctions have been reinforced; and the effects of the media, entertainment, popular culture and commercial products have intruded so far into our lives as to induce the breakdown and derailment of cultural sense. Man lives in the shadow of competitive pressure and desire, his consciousness and introspective abilities deadened, his spirit fettered. It is hard to escape the limitations of thought fostered by circumstance, and as an artist constantly in contact with society, looking at the world through subjective eyes, the changes and upheavals in the general environment are keenly felt, and the mind and soul sink gradually into deep frustration, but art signifies the pursuit and sublimation of the spirit and ideals of mankind. The essence of art lies not in elaborate styles or techniques, but rests on the cornerstone of life and humanity, and the road of artistic creation is solidly paved with nature, practicality, and life. The theme of this thesis, ‘Movement and tranquility ─ the expression of spatial movement in watercolor art’, is an exploration of the ideal spiritual level of the author, and is not meant to be a depiction of the real world. The chief aim is to research and explore the expression of spatial movement in watercolor painting, and through subjective thinking, create a unique visual language using rhyme and rhythm, striving to achieve a ‘balance of movement’, in order to be at one with the harmony and rhythm of nature and the universe, reflecting a peace and calm within. All movement fundamentally involves space, and continuous movement in space is rhythm, the expression of life in space, the symbol of the power of life and the never ending cycle of life. ‘Movement’ is appreciated differently by all, and certainly stirs different levels of consciousness. Through the arrangement of ideas concerning the meaning of life within movement, the author explores the many aspects of life and movement in the philosophy of contemporary art and Chinese paintings, Thus providing ample opportunities for deeper research and analysis, and furthering the quest for a mode of creation that incorporates the truth of life and the essence of the object. The author begins by approaching personal issues about life, endeavoring to return to the simplest form of self. The author also draws on the concepts of improvement and personal development of ideas and outlook, elements present in traditional Chinese philosophy, in order to seek absolute freedom of the soul to freely communicate with nature. The quest for a pure, simple soul to better appreciate the world, nature and life continues.
