Abstract
The author had difficulty in detecting and expressing emotions. The condition caused panic attack. After seeking professional help, it was found that the author could express the emotions more smoothly through artistic non-verbal expression, which means, art is therapeutic. Therefore, the author was interested in expressionism and art therapy, and started this project. There are many image-related psychological tests in art therapy, one of which is the House-Tree-Person Test (The H-T-P Test). In the test, the participants are asked to draw house(s), tree(s) and person(s) from their imagination. The participant's personality or psychological state is analyzed through the appearance and interrelationship of each element. This art project appropriated the process, in which the author himself was the participant, he drew paintings about house(s), tree(s) and person(s). The record includes the thoughts and moods when painting, the thinking process of retouching, and etc., was submitted to an art therapist, who provided a psychological commentary based on this information. The author's self-language could be transformed into public language through this process, allowing the audience to appreciate and comprehend it on a broader level. The research was conducted through the principles of the literature review and action research method. Susanne Langer's semiotics aesthetics, the relationship between psychotherapy and art, the expressionism, and the trauma-healing genre of art, were included in the literature study. A total of eleven works had been completed and were exhibited under the title "Babel 101". The airtight space, expressive structure of trees and the traumatized body roughly correspond to the three elements of the H-T-P test. Externally, this study deals with the relationship between psychology and art, bringing art, which has been included in psychotherapy, back into the art space, unpacking artistry from science; for the author, the series is at once a visual artwork and an archive of art therapy, through the exhibition, audience discussion and interpretation by the art therapist, the author would be able to express and understand himself more deeply, and therapeutic effect happens by means of the process.
