Abstract
The purposes of this research were to explore the differences in perceived parental expectations and life adjustment among high school students on different background; and the relations between perceived parental expectations, parents’ expectation and life adjustment of high school students. The subjects of this research were 828 senior high school students in Hsinchu area, and 87 parents were invited to participate in the pair research to examine the differences between parents’ expectations and perceived parental expectations of high school students. The instruments used in this research included: perceived parental expectations scale, parents’ expectations scale and life adjustment scale. The statistical methods used in this research included: t-test, one-way ANOVA, pearson product-moment correlation and multiple regression analysis. The finding were as follows: 1.For high school students, there were no gender differences in perceived parental expectations. But as to perceived parental expectations of daily life performance, girls perceived significantly higher expectations than boys. 2.There were no significant differences in life adjustment among high school students with different parent education level. 3.Girls’ life adjustment in high school was better than boys’; but high school students with different parent education level do not have significant difference in life adjustment. 4.Perceived parental expectations of high school students were positively related to their life adjustment. 5.Perceived parental expectations of high school students were significant in predicting their life adjustment. In addition, perceived parental expectations in daily life performance is the most dominant factor in life adjustment. 6.There was significant difference between perceived parental expectations of high school students and parents’ expectations. 7.Parents’ expectations were not related to life adjustment of their children in high school. Finally, based on the findings, suggestions for guidance, parenting education, parents and future research were provided.
