Abstract
In recent years, the South Korean film and television industry has experienced rapid development, leading to the global rise of Korean Wave culture. The success of Korean films has influenced the values and aesthetic perspectives of audiences in Taiwan, as well as the prevailing trends in appearance and self-esteem. This research aims to explore the underlying ideology beneath the surface of Korean films' emphasis on physical appearance, focusing on the prevalent issues of appearance anxiety and self-esteem in contemporary society. Through textual analysis, this study seeks to uncover how the texts represent appearance-oriented values, the pursuit of physical beauty, and society's stereotypical beauty standards. Five Korean films, belonging to the theme of appearance-oriented narratives, which were released in Taiwan, have been selected as samples for this study. Building upon existing literature and using a three-act narrative structure, the study examines the character arcs to verify whether character development and decline are related to transformations in appearance. Additionally, the study investigates whether Korean films frequently employ satire to criticize appearance-oriented values, while potentially reinforcing the significance of physical beauty through subtexts. The research findings reveal that the transformation of main characters in Korean films predominantly revolves around changes in body shape, accompanied by instances of exaggerating appearance discrimination through dialogues. The narrative content often presents a negative perspective to criticize appearance-oriented values and punishes the perpetrators of appearance discrimination. The endings typically involve the triumph of morally upright characters or those who undergo image transformations. Overall, in these five Korean films, the main characters, after altering their appearance, can achieve success within a short period, with their character arcs trending positively and upwards compared to their pre-transformation state. However, these characters' success is contingent upon their changed physical appearance, inadvertently reinforcing the significance of physical beauty and creating a contradiction with the original intention to critique appearance-oriented values. The results of this study can provide audiences with an understanding of how Korean society's standards of physical beauty and body image are portrayed in films, leading to a reflection on the influence of appearance values conveyed in the prevalent Korean Wave media on society and culture.
