Abstract

海明威,出世於伊利諾州(Illinois),其所作《旭日又升》(The Sun Also Rises)乃影射小說,揭示「迷失世代」(the Lost Generation)道德之頹敗、幻滅。
Days as an expatriate in Paris and the trip to Spain for the San Fermín inspire Ernest Hemingway to transform his experiences into his debut novel: The Sun Also Rises. Hemingway, an Illinoisan writer whose writing in The Sun Also Rises mirror the moral decay and the disillusion thereupon, found in what Gertrude Stein coins the “lost generation”. Hemingway, who portrays hedonism and alcoholism in The Sun Also Rises, reflecting the essence of boredom, existential boredom in particular. Although much has been discussed regarding Hemingway’s writings in The Sun Also Rises, the interpretation through boredom is absent, nonetheless. This thesis hence analyzes the theme of existential boredom, as it shows in Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, through the theories of existential boredom by scholars and philosophers. This thesis argues that existential boredom presents itself as a latent presence in Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, with the characters drinking and socializing and traveling as attempts at addressing vacuity.
