Abstract
This study aims at investigating the life experience and coping of the independent-living youth under long-term placement in the children’s home. With the participants’ narratives and the research’s interpretation, the purpose of the study is to apprehend how life experiences influence the participants and how the participants cope with their experiences as well. Based on the narrative research method, the researcher has interviewed two participants with a semi-structured interview program to co-construct their life narratives and has analyzed the narratives with the “holistic-content” method. The impacts of the life experiences on the independent-living youth under long-term placement in the children’s home are as follow: (1) the environments of the original family and the long-term separation have alienated the youth from their families; (2) they have difficulties in revealing themselves and trusting others; (3) they have been used to facing difficulties on their own and becoming self-reliant; (4) the financial burden from the independent living has limited their personal development. In addition, the coping strategies that the youth use to adjust to their lives are as follow: (1) To accept the reality first and then seek solutions to the problems; (2) To repress and deny the loss of family to make themselves move on; (3) To pursue interpersonal or attachment relationships to enhance their social support system; (4) To increase self-confidence and courage by accrediting and encouraging themselves; (5) To regard the past life experiences positively and obtain new meanings and strengths of life; (6) To seek spiritual comfort in religious belief. Based on the study result and the researcher’s self-reflection, the researcher has proposed further academic and practical suggestions for the helping professionals, children’s home, and children in the children’s home as well as for future study.
