Abstract

The Impact of Humor-Training Program For Parents on Parents’ Sense of Humor and Parent-Child Communication Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop a humor-training program for parents and evaluate the impact of the training program on parent’s sense of humor and parent-child communication. The humor-training program in this study is developed based on the concept of Parent Effectiveness Training. In addition, the program combines the design principle and learning model of educational exploration activities. The objective of this training program is to assist parents to develop six key capabilities including understanding humor, creating humor, humor response, humor in social context, attitude toward humor, and laugh tendency. Moreover, this program is aimed to improve the effectiveness of parent-child communication. The study adopted pre-test and post-test to evaluate the performance of this training program. The target group in this test is parents of Nan-Hu High School students. There are 30 parents in this study; 15 of them are in the test group, the rest are in the control group. The test group received three-hours group training on a weekly basis for eight weeks. No treatment is applied to the control group. The impact on parents’ sense of humor and parent-child communication is evaluated by Multi-Dimension Sense of Humor Scale and Parent-Child Communication Survey (parent version). In data analysis, category of group is the independent variable. Pre-test score is the co-variable. Post-test score is the dependent variable. Multi-Variables Analysis Method is applied to examine the hypothesis of the study. In addition, program analysis, session feedback sheet, member interview questionnaire, and group leader review report are applied for qualitative analysis. Qualitative analysis is applied to further evaluate the effectiveness of this program. Major findings of this research are as follow: 1. Quantitative study findings: (1) The humor-training program improved the following capabilities: creating humor, humor response, social humor, and laugh tendency. (2) No significant effects are found in capabilities of understanding humor and attitude toward humor. (3) The humor-training program has effectively improved the performance of parent-child communication. 2. Qualitative study findings: (1) Members hold a positive view of the training program. (2) The training program is considered helpful by parents in the test group, as they perceived benefits and changes of their own. (3) The humor-training program improved parent’s sense of humor. (4) The humor-training program improved effectiveness of parent-child communication. Finally, researcher will further define the limitation of this study and provide recommendations for educators, counselors, training program coordinators and instructors based on findings from this study. Suggestions for future research will also be presented. Key words: humor-training program for parents, sense of humor, parent-child communication.
