Abstract
The purpose of this study reports of the sleep quality in Senior Community College elders, and the relationship of sleep quality with associated factors including demographic factors and physical activity. A total of 100 elders study in one of Senior Community College at Hsin Tien Covenant Church were purposive sampled and home-visited by the researcher. The average age of the subjects is 71±8.32 years old. It is found that average PSQI(Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) global score is 6.26±2.65, and 45% Senior Community College elders are poor sleepers whose scores are beyond the cutoff point of 5. Major findings by using statistics of one-way ANOVA, independent t-test and Pearson's product moment correlation of the study are listed below 1. Individual attributes of normal elders do not have apparent effect to sleep quality, except some poor perceived-health elders (p<0.01) and ones who have cardiovascular disease (p<0.05) can’t not have good sleep quality. 2. Physical activity was assessed using PASE (Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly). The mean score of physical activity amount among Senior Community college elders is 172.88±55.68. Bivariate statistics shows that older age and poorer perceived-health are significantly associated with less physical activity. Better sleep quality is positively correlated with more physical activity amount(r=-0.214,p<0.05). To sum up, the study recommended that the elderly in Senior Community College do not have good sleep quality. Apparently, there is a kind of relationship between sleep quality and physical activity.
