Abstract

The purpose of this research was to discuss the development of volunteer commitment of Girl Scout leaders based on Serious Leisure Theory. By qualitative method, the researcher proceeded and analyzed the interviews of six Girl Scout leaders and had the conclusions as below. 1. The performance of these Girl Scout leaders in activities matches what is characterized by Serious Leisure Theory. All the interviewees have similar traits. They treat leisure as a career in the endeavor; they make significant personal efforts and show their perseverance for scouting. They have their unique ethos. They get durable benefits such as personal enrichment, self-actualization, self-gratification and social interaction. Eventually, they would strongly identify with the Girl Scout movement and make their volunteer commitment. 2. The discovery stage of volunteer commitment of Girl Scout leaders is influenced by past experiences, such as the Scout experiences of their family members, their own experiences from Scout class or activities in school. All these will lead them to join their first official Girl Scout activity. 3. Primitive stage, to identify oneself as a leader. Girl Scout Adult Leader Training, Girl Scout experiences and participation in activities are the key factors. In the development, he/she firstly identifies him/herself as a Girl Scout leader. Why and when these interviewees formed their identification vary from their Scout backgrounds. 4. With role identity, one would recognize more responsibilities of a leader and encourage oneself to be a model for the Girl Scouts. Once identifying themselves as a leader, the interviewees changed behaviorally and spiritually. They would encourage themselves to proactively pursue more professional skills and knowledge. They have more self-confidence and feel proud of being a member of Girl Scout groups. They would do their best to be a model for girl scouts, and therefore became more self-motivating and self-demanding. 5. To eventually make volunteer commitment. Based on the data, the researcher divide the development of a Girl Scout’s volunteer commitment into three stages – discovering, identifying and making commitment. In the first stage, people participated in Girl Scout movement because of his/her enjoyable experiences in scouting. By joining more and more activities, their professional skills and knowledge increase, they can therefore give free play in this field. They make like-minded friends, and They form their unique ethos. Their identity with the Girl Scout movement is enforced. Eventually, they are willing to make their volunteer commitment. The results conducted from the research will be provided to Girl Scout Adult leader,Girl Scout organization and the later researchers as reference.
