Abstract

The rise of Musical Nationalism in the 19th century enriched the music culture of Europe. The emergence of a group of composers who dedicated to revitalizing their own national music changed the dominance of Western European music trends in various countries. Leoš Janáček(1854-1928) is one of the important nationalistic musicians. He is a well-known Czech composer, educator, conductor, music theorist and folk music collector. This study is an analysis and interpretation of Janáček' s composition for piano cycle " On an Overgrown Path, Series I". The whole thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter is introduction; the second chapter describes Janáček's musical style and Cultivation; Chapter3: Exploring the background of composition for piano cycle " On an Overgrown Path, Series I" and the compositional method of speech-melody; Chapter 4 is divided into ten sections where each section provides musical analysis of each of the ten small pieces in detail and explores the use of speech-melody; Chapter 5 makes a comprehensive interpretation of this set of works from characteristics, tempos, voicings, tone colors, and the use of pedals. Finally, Chapter 6 makes a unified conclusion for this paper. It is my hope that the detailed discussion and analysis in this document can be practically applied to the performance and Czech national spirit and beauty of Janáček' s music.
