Abstract
To address the challenges posed by an aging society, numerous studies have highlighted the need to enhance the overall well-being of older adults, particularly in promoting health and delaying aging. Active exercise can significantly improve the quality of life and extend beyond physical health, encompassing psychological and emotional aspects. Related research indicates that appropriate home design not only meets the physiological and functional needs of older adults but also stimulates their interest in exercise, thereby promoting mental health and improving life satisfaction. Therefore, this study focuses on how the home environment can encourage exercise participation among older adults.Through interviews and analyses with designers, common concerns were identified regarding the selection of exercise furniture, primarily focusing on functionality and spatial adaptability. Functionality, durability, safety, and ease of use are crucial factors that need to be balanced during the design process. A deeper exploration of the needs of older adults in their living spaces, as well as their expectations for interior design styles, provides guidance for interior designers to better meet the needs of older adults in terms of living comfort, aesthetics, and mental health, thereby enhancing their quality of life.To promote exercise participation among older adults, this study combines interviews and case studies to propose design strategies for both horizontal and vertical movements, resulting in the creation of two products, FlexArc and FlexBoard, that can be adapted to various spaces. These comprehensive design solutions emphasize foot movements, hand movements, and core muscle stretches, aiming to create a beautiful, comfortable living environment that enhances the well-being of older adults.Furthermore, the research findings highlight the crucial role of interior design in supporting the well-being of older adults and achieving healthy aging, reinforcing the importance of creating living environments that support their well-being. It is hoped that these recommendations for incorporating soft exercise into living spaces will inspire future innovations in interior design, offering more feasible solutions for an aging society. By effectively planning soft exercise spaces, not only can exercise motivation and life satisfaction be enhanced, but it can also lay the foundation for health and delaying aging.
