Abstract
The study aims to investigate local culture image elements and the formation of the image elements in Gongguan of Taipei city that base on the context of local discourse and city image concept which lively discussed by all sectors in current society. Two types of communities which located in Gongguan are selected for comparison, and named “the insider: old Gongguan residents at Jianjun public housing.” and “the outsider: NTU Consciousness campus organization in National Taiwan University” respectively. The techniques of participant observation, in-depth interview, archival research and cognitive map analysis are used to collect data. The main findings of the study are as follows: 1. Two communities constructing the culture imageelements of Gongguan are as follows: (1) Description of the NTU Consciousness, the culture paths were constructed by Royal Palm Boulevard, Zhoushan Road, Fanglan Road, Wanxin Railway and Liugong Canal. The culture edges were constructed by Fu Szu-nien memorial garden. The culture districts were constructed by the Gongguan churches, the Japanese-style dormitories and the culture heritages of NTU campus. The culture nodes were constructed by the bicycle issues and the campus public space issues. Finally, the culture landmark was constructed by National Taiwan University campus. (2) Description of the Old Gongguan, the culture paths were constructed by Zhoushan Road, Wanxin Railway, Liugong Canal and Tingzhou Road. The culture edges were constructed by Xindian River riverside and Roosevelt Road. The culture districts were constructed by the Gongguan churches, the Gongguan temples, the Japanese-style dormitories, the Gongguan military dependents, and Taipei Water Park. The culture nodes were constructed by the bicycle issues and the campus public space issues. Finally, the culture landmark was constructed by National Taiwan University campus. 2. The type of the formation of the culture image elements in Gongguan are as follows: (1) Visually oriented: divided into “continuity of landscape” and “appearance of unique style” (2) Living structures: divided into “connection of the daily life”, “competition of the different functions, and “interruption of the observers and the space” (3) Daily practice: divided into “identification of local history and culture”, “old Gongguan memories of the ordinary people”, “reinterpretation of space meaning”, “the platform that has been given the meaning of dialogue” and “reflection of group differences in lifestyle” In light of above findings, researcher reflects on Lynch's city image argument. Then researcher transforms the argument into the concept of "local identity" and proposes certain suggestions for the succeeding researchers as reference.
