Abstract
This study addresses the shortage of professional Mandarin-language teaching resources in Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector. As Mandarin-speaking visitors represent a growing share of the global market, tour guides’ Mandarin proficiency has become a key factor in the Kingdom’s tourism development. Interviews and questionnaire surveys show that current materials fail to meet workplace needs, especially in real-time communication and cultural adaptation. In response, this project develops customized teaching resources that enhance guides’ skills and confidence when serving Mandarin-speaking travelers. The research integrates the ADDIE model, the CLIL approach, and UNWTO TS theory. Job-scene analysis and mind mapping inform six core units: Greeting, F&B service, Accommodation, Emergency handling, Pilgrimage, and Cultural-site interpretation. The resulting “Saudi Tour Guide’s Practical Mandarin Handbook” adopts a modular structure; each theme contains 8-10 sub-units with sentences and key vocabulary, include Chinese T. and S. characters, Hanyu Pinyin, Arabic translations, Romanization, and QR codes linking to bilingual audio in Mandarin and Arabic. As the first situational Mandarin textbook for Saudi tour guides, it is expected to enhance service quality and establishes a complementary trainer-training system to maximizes impact.
