Abstract

Ned Rorem (b.1923) is one of the most distinguished composers in America, and is called “the world's best composer of art songs” by Time Magazine. As an American, Rorem has been fond of French music and even calls himself French, and stayed in France for six years during the 50s. The time he spent in France was mainly in Paris and Hyères. During the time he composed nineteen English songs, and six of them were made in Paris while the other thirteen were made in Hyères. This thesis selects seventeen songs. The lyrics for most of them were the poems of Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), Robert Browning (1812-1889), Paul Goodman (1911-1972), Thomas Lodge (1558-1625), Howard Moss (1922-1987), Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), Walt Whitman (1819-1892) and William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), the other two were quotations of Bible, including one from Matthew and one from Luke. This thesis includes synopsis Rorem’s life, style and the description of the poets. Also, interpretation each of the seventeen American songs. I hope that my research will not only contribute to the field of musical performance but also inform others about the music and style of the Rorem period.
