Abstract
This creative research was influenced by the 2010 Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” directed by Louie Psihoyos. The film describes how local fishermen in Taiji, a town in Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, near Tokyo, Japan, use sonar to drive dolphins into a cove and indiscriminately hunt and slaughter them, turning the cove into a shocking sea of blood. The researcher was inspired to use their design expertise to create an ecological picture book to appeal to the public to pay attention to marine conservation and improve traditional whale hunting culture. In order to better understand the culture related to whale hunting, the researcher went to Taiji for field research and visited the world’s largest cetacean museum, the Taiji Whale Museum. In addition to gaining a better understanding of cetaceans, the researcher also felt that in addition to the bloody hunting depicted in the documentary, there are still preserved cetacean historical materials and information. How to balance traditional culture and ecological conservation concepts is what this creation hopes to achieve through the promotion of ecological picture books, so that more people can start paying attention and noticing information related to marine ecological conservation and cetacean conservation activities. In order to create an ecological picture book, this creative research combed through the literature to discuss the history of picture books, the definition of ecological picture books, the classification of composition, the relevant ecology and characteristics of whales, and through case analysis to summarize the composition of many award-winning works in international illustration competitions. It was found that diagonal composition is the most common composition, followed by contrast composition, and another type of continuous object composition was summarized in other composition classifications. These three major compositions were used as the basis for the creation of ecological picture books, and finally the ecological picture book “Yuko and Shunsuke” was created and drawn. The physical book of “Yuko and Shunsuke” is 25 × 18.5cm, with nearly 2,000 words of story text and 18 pages of full-page illustrations, presented in hardcover to tell the story of two whales meeting, falling in love, and being forced to separate. In addition, the creative results were also exhibited from May 4th to May 9th, 2023 under the exhibition name “Yuko and Shunsuke: Li Wen ko Picture Book Creation Exhibition” on the first floor of the National Normal University Library. Through ecological picture books, it is hoped that readers will be guided to care for whales and other marine life and reflect on human overfishing behavior.
