Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to understand the status of the students' knowledge, attitude and health behavior and related factors in a Taipei junior high school on the prevention of metabolic syndrome. The target group for this study focused on students of Grade seven, eight, and nine in the second semester of Year 100, based on the research method of the ratio of random stratified cluster sampling. The research tool was based on a structured questionnaire survey which included background variables and knowledge, attitude, health behavior on the prevention of metabolic syndrome among a total of 348 valid questionnaires. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The result of knowledge on metabolic syndrome showed the upper middle level. The result of attitudes showed tending to "agree". The result of health behaviors showed "sometimes make it" and "often make it." 2. The relationship between knowledge, attitudes, health behavior and background variables showed: (1) There were significant differences between knowledge on metabolic syndrome and background variables of "Grade ", "academic achievement" and "knowing risk factors of metabolic syndrome." (2) There were significant differences between attitudes on the prevention of metabolic syndrome and background variables of "family socioeconomic status" and "knowing risk factors of the metabolic syndrome." (3) There were significant differences between the adoption of healthy behaviors to prevent metabolic syndrome and background variables of "Grade seven students", " gender " and "academic performance." 3. There were positive correlations between knowledge and attitudes on prevention of the metabolic syndrome. Students who had more knowledge then more positive attitudes on prevention of the metabolic syndrome. There were positive correlations between attitudes on prevention of the metabolic syndrome and health behaviors, showing that the more positive attitudes students take on health behavior of the metabolic syndrome, the better health behavior they would perform. 4. Among the background variables, "gender", "Grade seven" and "attitude on prevention of the metabolic syndrome" could effectively predict health behavior.
