Abstract
Italian composer Francesco Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) was one of the most important European vocal chamber music composers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His songs remain popular even today. They are favorites with the public and opera singers alike. Princess Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna di Savoia (1851-1926), the future Queen of Italy, and Queen of the United Kingdom Alexandrina Victoria (1819-1901) were both deeply touched by his songs. Both employed him as voice teacher and court composer. Tosti’s songs were so popular contemporaries spoke of the “Tosti style” or “alla Tosti.” This report was compiled by L’Istituto Nazionale is Tostiano costituito ad Ortona and the Ricordi Publishing House of Milan, Italy. It includes songs in different languages (Italian, English, French, and Italian regional dialects), from different eras, in different styles, and subjects them to analysis and interpretation. Chapter One lays out the goals and research methods. Chapter Two provides background on and analysis of Italian vocal chamber music and developments during the nineteenth and twentieth-centuries. Chapter Three introduces Tosti’s life and works. Chapter Four selects twelve songs and interprets their melodies and lyrics. Chapter Five sums up the findings in the previous four chapters.
