Abstract
The thesis “Lovein Peking Opera” mainly focuses on the portrayal of love in traditional Chinese opera, it selects six classic plays as the primary subjects of research and creation. It has two connotations: one represents the storytelling in Peking Opera, and the other represents the idea of playfulness, reflecting and expressing the topic of love. Therefore, when the author enters the theater to watch and listen to the opera, they will find out that traditional Chinese opera is a treasure of humanity, providing an elegant and exquisite artistic enjoyment, satisfying the senses, and allowing people to immerse themselves in the dramatic situations. People are willing to die, be born, and live for love, experiencing the twists and turns, the deep and beautiful emotions, the gripping and sincere feelings. This love transcends time and space, echoing through the ages, and true lovers eventually unite. There are also tragic and desperate acts of sacrifice for love, with endless lingering regrets, hoping to reunite in the next life, requiring immense passion and courage. From this, the author gains a wealth of creative material and inspiration, transforming them into mental images. They then integrate traditional and modern ink painting techniques, using ink painting as a foundation to present different styles of ink paintings, enriching our understanding of these classic operas. The structure of this thesis is divided into five chapters: Chapter 1: Introduction, including research motivation and purpose, research content and scope, research methods, and definition of terms; Chapter 2: An analysis of the aesthetic of love in Peking Opera, discussing the symbolism of romantic plots in Peking Opera, the roles of Peking Opera, and analysis of Peking Opera paintings by artists from both sides of the Taiwan Strait; Chapter 3: "Love in Peking Opera" creative concept and practice, further explaining the creative concept and practice;Chapter 4: Analysis of creative works and the creative process, including the prelude and the six major classic opera series; Chapter 5: Conclusion, reflecting on the creative process and future prospects. Peking Opera stands out in the world of theater with its distinct national characteristics and unique aesthetic features. It combines realism, expressiveness, and virtuality, and shares similarities with modern painting in terms of realism, expressiveness, and abstraction. Both share the same spirit of innovation and change within tradition. This research on Peking Opera creation aims to use the most elegant and richly meaningful drama art of the Chinese nation to create ink figure works, presenting a new visual language. Hope to create new opportunities for the development of traditional opera in this era, making it more appealing and identifiable to young people. Keywords: storytelling, modern ink painting, symbolism, Peking Opera characters, virtuality
