Abstract
“The library is the heart of the university.”This quote indicates that the library holds theacademic function of the university. In order tobetter satisfy users’ need, academic librarieshave begun to provide many innovativeservices to enhance quality and functionality, and one of them is subject services. Subjectservices are provided through specialized,collection-based, and customized integrallibrary services performed by subjectspecialists. This study utilizes the survey datacollected from library directors oradministrators from eight academic libraries, which have offered the subject services. It isintended to identify the questions andconcerns of subject services regarding (1) thestatus of services provision; (2) librarydirectors or administrators’ attitude toward andopinions on subject services; and (3)challenges and opportunities for subjectservices. Subject services is not new in theacademic libraries in Europe and NorthAmerica, compared with the early-stageddevelopment in Taiwan. With differences inacademic environment, academic libraries inTaiwan should develop its own path andpriorities in implementing subject services. It ishoped that this study can shed light on bettermanagement and better service of subjectservices for other academic libraries.
