Abstract

In 2022, a survey on the current state of sports in Taiwan revealed that outdoor activities, particularly mountain climbing and hiking, are the most popular among the Taiwanese people. Taiwan's abundant natural resources offer a variety of mountain trails with different levels of difficulty and natural scenery, providing a unique outdoor experience and a temporary escape from urban life. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021 further boosted the popularity of outdoor recreational activities as people sought ways to stay active while adhering to social distancing measures. While sports bring numerous benefits, the construction of sports facilities requires land, and the production and disposal of sports equipment can lead to environmental issues. Mountain climbing, being a leisure activity directly reliant on natural resources, can have various environmental impacts. The number of people participating in mountain climbing doubled in 2021 compared to 2018, highlighting the need to address the environmental concerns associated with this activity. This study employs interviews to explore the current challenges facing mountain climbing and to propose future development directions, along with specific recommendations. After conducting interviews and analyzing the results, it was found that the main issues arising from mountain sports include route development, littering, fire usage, lack of physical fitness and knowledge. The management measures are difficult due to the extensive jurisdiction, leading to many passive management methods. Environmental education in mountain climbing is mainly focused on teaching in specialized schools, and the certification system needs the government to adopt more current methods to guide various departments and participants. The development of the mountain sports industry is progressing towards sustainability, and it will be necessary to review and adjust relevant measures based on the actual situation after the pandemic. This study suggests the establishment of digital application data, detailed regulations and action plans, and the establishment of a dedicated mountain sports unit to integrate sports and environmental expertise across disciplines.
