Abstract
This thesis focuses upon the application of color embroidery on creation of portraits, using portraits of NBA basketball players as a case study. Portrait is a form of color embroidery creations, which utilize needle as tool and various thread and silk textile as materials. This paper elaborates the techniques of color embroidery used in Taiwan, and presents the example of portraits of NBA star basketball players. With the conjunction of color embroidery techniques and modern visual designs of portrait, I develop new visual communication skills and conduct experiment on color embroidery formation. The research is done as follows: 1. Analyzing the development of portrait design ── I study the various techniques adopted by color embroidery and search for their features, hoping to reveal the many aspects of portrait design and thus facilitate the future creation. 2. Exploring the temporal characteristics and trends ── through three-dimensional, two-dimensional, and decoration stitch, I manifest the temporal and visual features of portrait embroidery. 3. Interchangeability, fluidity, and stretchability ── I take the “object-concept” mode, which analyzes the characteristics of the subject matter, and applies the appropriate skills to the stitching of portrait. This paper consists of literature review, analysis of techniques, and creation. To fully explore the application of color embroidery on portrait, I attempt to start from discovering the embroidery culture and folk arts, and turn the “embossed stitch” into the “object-concept” mode. By the use of three-dimensional exaggeration, twisted shapes, and geometric arrangements, I engage in a variety of production, which employs several techniques ── manual stitch, machine stitch, flocking, and paper cut ── to render the multiple facets of portrait embroidery. Although only the instance of NBA basketball players is given in this paper, yet the conclusion can be applied to diverse subjects. Hence, I reckon more creative works would be inspired and more multiple-visual objects can be born.
