Abstract
This study aimed to explore the professional arts researchers’ needs for the metadata fields adopted in digital archives of the art museums. Based on the qualitative research, the content analysis and in-depth interview methods were used to collect the research data. The first stage was using the content analysis method to observe and comparatively analyze the metadata fields provided by the collection query system of the websites of three public fine art museums in Taiwan and six art museums abroad, including the query field and the metadata field of artwork. The second stage was using the interview outlines to conduct the in-depth interviews with twelve domestic professional arts researchers to probe into their needs for those fields provided by the collection query system of the art museums’ websites, including what fields they were like to add or take off and the problems they encountered while applying the fields. Moreover, their ideal fields were also consulted, as well as their usual channels and sources for collecting arts related research data. Synthesized the collected research data; after comparatively analyzed those data, the study conclusions which showed as following were obtained: I.The characteristics and differences of the fields of the collection query system from the domestic and international art museums. II.The current conditions and experiences of the professional arts researchers while applying the fields. III.The problems that the professional arts researchers encountered while they were applying the fields. IV.The channels and sources for the professional arts researchers to collect information. V.The needs of the professional arts researchers for the data fields of artwork information. Finally, this study offers several suggestions as following: I.The suggestions for the collection query system of the domestic art museums that adopts metadata fields: Further extensions of artwork-related links and reading materials can be increased, as well as the additional related information about the authors. II.Layer the metadata fields that provided by the system, and offer more extended clues and related links: Users would like more artwork-related data provided by the system, yet they consider that the metadata fields should be layered. III.Establish a union catalogue of the museum’s art collection: This helps to increase the amount of data for querying, and also to expand the range of data. Furthermore, this will save the users’ time when they have to do cross-site querying.
