Abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence of extracurricular activities (henceforth: EA) on people who are making career choices, specifically for those anticipating the contents of new jobs as the extension of EA. In this study, three qualified participants were invited to share their stories of career as extension of EA, and each narration was recorded via semi-structure questionnaire with in-depth interview. Later, each narration was transcribed and then was analyzed under the “holistic-content” narrative approach. It is discovered that three participants share identical background factors as follows, revealed in the narrative data: (1) They chose a major as to meet social expectations. (2) EAs offer unlimited space for self-exploration. (3) Career exploration is processed unobtrusively and naturally. (4) Career crucially extends from the memories of unforgettable events of extra-curricular activities. The triggers for three participants to choose an extracurricular-activity-extended career are given as follows: (1) EA experiences provide alternatives for career choices. (2) A turning point occurred in EA leads to abandon their original believes and thoughts. (3) Experiences of EA help to develop their life philosophy and perspectives. (4) A brave new choice needs strong supports from behind. It is further found out that participants with fruitful EA experiences possess two major attitudes toward their life and career: (1) They believe that it is the EA experiences that enlighten the core belief of their own. (2) They are satisfied with the current life and job, despite the fact that they are continuingly facing new challenges and difficulties. Finally, this study offer suggestion to student affairs offices, college students, professional helper and further researches and present my reflections.
