Abstract
This study aims to explore the relationship between family atmosphere and leaving-home motivations among unmarried adult children. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with eight unmarried adult participants who demonstrated motivations to leave home. The researcher collaborated with participants to immerse in the phenomenon of familial experiences, examining their subjective interpretations of family atmosphere, leaving-home motivations, and the constructed meanings of"leaving home" and "home." The findings reveal that the relationship between family atmosphere and leaving-home motivations among unmarried adult children is primarily influenced by factors such as family interactions, economic conditions, household dynamics and environment, as well as traditional family values and broader cultural influences within the Chinese community. Key leaving-home motivations include the pursuit of personal independence, privacy, and space; the need to establish psychological boundaries through physical distance; the desire to live according to personal preferences; the avoidance of familial conflict or emotional entanglements; and career-related decisions. The meanings of"leaving home" and "home" are interpreted as a balance between achieving greater autonomy and maintaining a connection to one’s familial identity. The study further provides an in-depth analysis of themes such as the parent-child dynamics of separation and reunion, the negotiation of family atmosphere and boundaries, the transmission of traditional family values, and the overall phenomenon of children navigating between "leaving" and "staying." This research deepens the understanding of relationships between unmarried adult children and their families of origin, offering practical implications for counseling and related helping professions. Additionally, it provides valuable insights for individuals experiencing similar challenges, fostering greater self-awareness. The study concludes with recommendations for future research directions to further explore these important issues.
