Abstract
This creative research explores the picture book Rainy Season as a means to guide children in recognizing, understanding, and transforming low-mood emotions. Emotional competence is essential for children’s adaptation, relationships, and mental health, enabling them to better cope with stress and challenges. Focusing on the negative emotions often associated with rainy weather, this study employs visual and narrative design to use Rainy Season as a metaphor for emotional lows, illustrating the process of emotional transformation and supporting children’s emotional awareness and regulation. The target readers are children aged 4 to 8, spanning preschool to lower elementary levels. Three representative emotional picture books were analyzed to examine color use, story structure, character expression, and image-text integration. These findings informed the creative design. In addition, the works of three watercolor artists known for rainy-day themes were studied, with particular attention to their use of light, shadow, and watercolor techniques, which were then applied to the picture book. The book was digitally illustrated while striving to preserve the hand-painted texture and authentic emotional quality to enhance reader connection. This research also integrates theories of children’s emotional development and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), highlighting picture books as effective tools for emotional education. By addressing the psychological link between climate and emotions, it demonstrates how picture books can help children develop positive strategies for regulation. Ultimately, the project integrates art and education to create a picture book with both educational and literary value, fostering children’s emotional resilience and providing a resource for parent-child reading and teaching practice.
