Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between social networks, health status, health behaviors, frailty, and sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults in Taiwan. Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from elderly health check-ups and medical services in Taipei City from January to October 2021. A total of 981 community-dwelling older adults were included in the analysis. The results were as follows.1.The average age of the participants was approximately 74.49 years, with 58.1% being female. About 13.3% of the community older adults met the criteria of frailty, and 14.5% were diagnosed with sarcopenia. The average social network score was 15.46.2.Bivariate analysis identified several factors associated with frailty, including age, social network, kidney function, cognitive status, depressive emotions, alcohol consumption, and exercise. Factors associated with sarcopenia included age, social network, metabolic syndrome, body mass index, cognitive status, alcohol consumption, and exercise.3.Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that older age, poorer social network, abnormal kidney function, and depressive emotions were associated with a higher risk of frailty. Similarly, older age, poorer social network, underweight body mass index, and inadequate weekly exercise (<150 minutes) were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia. Based on these findings, it is recommended to promote active social participation among older adults, as it can positively impact their health and help maintain their quality of life.
