Abstract
This study was initiated by the researcher’s mourning process of losing her terminally ill father. The process reflects bereavement and inquires about life and death. The researcher uses her father's own narrative records, as well as documents related to his end-of-life journey, to enable hermeneutic phenomenology. Research analysis is based on narrative research methods. Via the spiritual development of her father as he approached death, this study seeks to discover the inherent world of a dying man, as well as clarify the meaning of good dying . There are four themes in this study: (1) The mission of intensive care that is humanely and ethically implemented; (2) Death preparation which is powered by one’s free will; (3) The wisdom of an integrated life based on self-awakening and awareness; and (4) Self-transcendence that reaches the realm of “communion with the Divine”. Based upon the findings of this study, the researcher also provides references and professional recommendations for end-of-life care.
