Abstract
This study aims to explore the perceived experiences of counseling psychologists working with survivors of sexual trauma, including the challenges they face, the coping strategies they employ, and the positive meanings and personal growth that may arise from such work. Using purposive and snowball sampling, five counseling psychologists were interviewed through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The study adopted an interpretative phenomenological approach and thematic analysis. The findings were presented through three contextual lenses: 1. Counseling Psychologists’ Experiences of Working with Sexual Trauma Survivors — Three themes emerged: (1) the uniqueness of sexual trauma work, (2) the significant influence of external systems on sexual trauma work, and (3) the evolving roles and responsibilities of counselors. 2. Challenges and Coping Strategies Perceived by Counseling Psychologists — Three themes emerged: (1) sexual trauma work presents professional challenges, (2) the deep impact of such work on the counselors’ physical and psychological well-being, and (3) the importance of professional support and self-care strategies. 3. The Personal Impact and Life Changes from Engaging in Sexual Trauma Work — Three themes emerged: (1) professional growth and development, (2) changes in personal life, and (3) increased awareness of social issues and engagement in advocacy.Based on the findings, the study offers concrete recommendations and reflections for future research and professional practice. It is hoped that society will develop greater awareness and understanding of sexual trauma issues, and accompany survivors through their healing journeys.
