Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the returning home experiences and the adaptive process of unmarried adult females living with their parents after having left home for school. Narrative data were collected and analyzed in this study. Three participants were interviewed with a semi-structural questionnaire. The data were analyzed with the “Holistic-Content” narrative analysis and the verbatim of their life stories is presented in the study. The current study concluded four influences on the unmarried adult females from their home-returning experiences, including self independence, self growth, interaction with parents and impression on their family of origin. Each corresponds to an adaptation process: (1) they realize both parents’ and their needs and compromise themselves to an equilibrium point. (2) They act more mature which decreases the parents’ worries. (3) The understanding of their parents’ backgrounds and proper interpretation of their behaviors help them adapt to return home. (4) After accepting the status of their family of origin, they are able to develop appropriate interaction patterns with parents. We also conclude four factors impacting the adaptation process, including early experience, leaving home experience, study/life experience and personality characteristics. Based on the results, there are some suggestions made for professional helpers and unmarried adult females, a few suggestions are also made for future researches.
