西說艾爾摩沙-哈辛托．艾斯奇維(Jacinto Esquivel)神父的台灣觀察報告

Abstract

本論文主要呈現西班牙神父Jacinto Esquivel於1632年所撰寫的〈關於艾爾摩莎島情況的報告〉，內容包含對北台灣的礦產、原住民互動及貿易情況、以及對於西班牙殖民長官提出治理台灣的相關建議。流露傳教士觀看異文化的視域。此篇報告也是為研究西班牙在台時期歷史不可忽視的文獻。 首先西班牙在東亞殖民的始末，並台灣在東亞的地位轉變進行概述。因西班牙在東亞的貿易日漸蓬勃發展，進而帶動東亞區域內數條航線的發展。台灣周遭海域成為許多重要航線的必經之地，因此，台灣成為東亞海域的關鍵的地理位置。 其次再就傳教士Esquivel生平，與在台灣的布教經驗進行探討，試圖理解Esquivel的學養及宗教理念，有助於對此報告的理解。後解讀此報告的內容，分析北台灣聚落特色、物產及對外交易、原住民互動情形，以期建構神父的台灣經驗。最後，關於治台建議方面，則藉由Esquivel對台灣的認知，以及參照同時期西班牙在菲律賓的殖民經驗，分析神父所建議的治理策略。期望藉由此報告的所呈現對台灣的觀察與感受，得知當時西班牙在台殖民的情境，填補其相關研究的學術空白，能使傳教士Esquivel此篇報告呈現多元的意涵。

This thesis presents a report on the situation of the island of Hermosa that is written in 1632 by Spain Fr. Jacinto Esquivel.It contains minerals of northern Taiwan, Aboriginal interaction and trade in the Spanish colonial, in addition there are also recommendations for the Executive governance in Taiwan. It tells from the missionary’s point of view of different cultures. This document report can not be ignored when we refer to the studying of history of spainish colonial period in Taiwan. First of all, is the whole story of spanish colonialism in East Asia, and an overview about Taiwan's position in East Asia. Because of the Spanish trade in East Asia was increasing quickly, therefore, Taiwan becomed a key location in the East Asian Seas by bringing numbers of routes in the East Asian region. Secondly the Fr. Esquivel spent his life preaching in Taiwan, this thesis is trying to understand the knowledgement of Esquivel and religious philosophy, that will help the understanding of this report. By Interpreting the content of this report, we can analysis of the northern Taiwan settlement characteristics, properties, and external transactions, indigenous people interact, in order to reconstruct spanish priest’s Taiwan experience. Finally speaking of the recommendations mentioned by Esquivel, we referred to the spanish colonial experience at the same period in Philippines, and analized priest recommendations.We expected that through the observation and feelings of this report, we can understand more situation about the Spanish colonization in Taiwan and to fill the blank of academic study, and make missionary Esquivel’s report presents the meaning of diversity.
