zh_TW
The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of socio-cultural influences, internalization of the thin-ideal, and body dissatisfaction of adolescent girls, and to examine their relationships. The subjects were 437, 10-12 grade female students of 21 randomly selected classes from a senior high school in Taipei County. Four hundred nineteen provided valid data with a self-administered questionnaire with 95.9% response rate. By using procedures outlined by Baron and Kenny (1986), linear regression analysis, and the Sobel test, the effect of the sociocultural influences on body dissatisfaction through the internalization of the thin-ideal was assessed. The main findings of the study were as follows: 1.Among four socio-cultural influences, peer influence was the highest, followed by media influence and parental influence. 2.The subject’s awareness and internalization of the thin-ideal were both in higher level, and the former was higher than the latter. 3.The subjects frequently and usually felt dissatisfied with the body. The level of body dissatisfaction was high. 4.Media exposure couldn’t affect body dissatisfaction indirectly or directly. 5.Media influence couldn’t affect body dissatisfaction through the internalization of thin-ideal. But, media influence had direct effect on adolescent girls’ body dissatisfaction. 6.Peer influence and parental influence had both direct and indirect effect on adolescent girls’ body dissatisfaction. It was suggested that enhancing peer and parental acceptation of adolescent girls’ body shape, reducing mass media influence on the thin-ideal to eliminate the internalization of thin-ideal and body dissatisfaction of adolescent girls.en_US
