Abstract

Reproduction of Illusion and Reality showcases art from daily life featuring the relationship between people and living environment. Wang, Chung-Shih’s lyrically realistic style took shape in the water-soluble encaustic series from 2018 to 2020. In search of spiritual dynamic, Wang applied the medium, that was once lost for centuries, in her works to convey the associative interplay of illusion and reality. In the series Rainbow in the Rain, Wang transformed experiences of Taipei’s humid atmosphere into imaginary urban scenes. The optical characteristics of water-soluble encaustic strongly captured the mode of fast, brightness, transparency, and intensity. Employing the non-toxic binder with visual and tactile communications, the series Golden Branches and Jade Leaves created both rich texture for simulated effects and smooth surfaces for realistic expression. In 2018 Wang participated in water-soluble encaustic workshops held by Professor Pedro Cuni and Professor Wang, Chiung-Li at NTNU. Later, Wang translated a summary of the journal paper by Professor Pedro Cuni et al. published in 2012. The study carries out a chemical analysis proving that wax-and-soap is the encaustic formulation used by ancient Roman artists in wall and easel paintings which were found in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other sites conserved for over two thousand years. Summoned by the mysterious inspiration from centuries ago, Wang reproduced a resonance in the solo exhibition connecting illusion and reality as metaphors of eternity and mortality, echoing with the beauty of life.
