Abstract
Veranda is a semi-exterior style architectural element that is the crossing space on the first floor of continuous buildings, which can provide a cover apart from wind and rain without being restricted by these weather affection for commercial activities. It is common in the commercialized and inhabited area where the old city of Minnan cultural district is. Due to the geographical characteristics and cultural influences of various regions, veranda becomes advantage to provide a condition to transit between outdoor and indoor spaces. People will also use this semi-open space as an unique region. Under the buildings with veranda provided, people will carry out various groups or individual activities. Also the veranda culture will affect the design of the facade of the building, gradually forming their own local culture and affecting the whole city. Contextual design is based on the cultural, social or current affairs topics explored by the designer. It finds and analyses the elements in the real and historical context, and uses individual and independent styles to create a message for experience, and hence to demonstrate the meaning of its topic. This study conducted data analysis based on countries or regions where reside Chinese ethnics, such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. It conducts field surveys and collects historical data to summarizes the elements of environmental and cultural applications. The behaviors such as living habits and group activities are used to find the different point of views. In addition, to using the above design methods and analysis, this study also investigate and collects relevant cases of various types of design implementations related to veranda. Such as interior design, exhibition design, product design and graphic design. Personal interviews were conducted to find individual stories and cases of veranda. The information behind the analysis merges with the feasibility combinations which is discovered. Finally, mixing or repackaging the unique situational elements of veranda and complete three different types of design creations, such as building block models, interactive souvenirs of shophouses, and situational exhibitions. This presents the exploration of veranda culture and the meaning of veranda.
