Abstract

This study investigates the impact of incorporating Blooket, a gamified learning platform, on junior high school students’ English vocabulary acquisition and learning motivation. Fifteen ninth-grade EFL students from a remote area in Taiwan participated in a six-week intervention using Blooket during regular English classes. A one-group pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest design was employed, along with surveys and interviews.Findings showed significant improvement in students’ receptive vocabulary knowledge, with gains sustained in the delayed posttest. While quantitative data revealed no significant change in motivation, qualitative responses indicated increased engagement and enjoyment due to the platform’s game-based features. Students found Blooket user-friendly and effective for reinforcing vocabulary through repetition, though some noted issues with repetition, interface clarity, and screen fatigue.Overall, Blooket proved to be a useful tool for enhancing vocabulary learning and classroom interaction, particularly in under-resourced educational settings. Future research should explore its effects on productive vocabulary learning and broader student populations.
