A Study of the Forms of Basketball Rules and Control of the Ball: From the Perspective of Critical Pedagogy July, 2014 Author:Juan, Chang-Ting Advisor : Shy, Deng-Yau Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate to control of the ball when participants involved in basketball games with different forms of rules. Norbert Elias’ Game Model and Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of field were applied when inquiring rule forms and observing the games. Benefitting from above-mentioned advanced theories, this study adopted critical pedagogy to analyse the influences under different forms of basketball rules. Participants were single class of a vocational high school student (8 males and 34 females). Students were grouped by the results of one minute shooting test. Methods: experiments were operated in official-rules situation and modified 543210-rule situation. Different categories of student actions were recorded and analysed through systematic observation. Some students were interviewed after the games. Results: the allocation of skill performances was divergent in different basketball rule situations especially in terms of the categories of pass, catch and rebound. Under the modified 543210-rule situation, participants’ interactions and opportunities of participation were increased. Conclusion: the forms of basketball rules would affect participants to control ball, and affect participants’ actions, and the atmosphere in games. A rule that all participants could in the game, participants would be willing to act in the field. Suggestion: Physical Education teachers should design or modify rules according to students’ abilities, in order that all students could act in the field of learning.
