Abstract
This dissertation"Immerse in Life’s Perceptions and Representations" is based on Zhuangzi's philosophy, combined with post-modern spirit, and explores the perceptions and representations of life through painting, constructing a dialogue between Eastern philosophy and Western contemporary art. The core focuses on Zhuangzi's thoughts such as "the unity of things and self," "the equality of things," and "the free and easy wandering," transforming these ideas into the language of painting, allowing art to transcendfigurative representation and embody the inner spirit of life. Through various theories such as allegory metaphors, philosophical symbols, abstract art, and time expression, this paper compares the integration of form and content between Eastern and Western artists, exploring how theory andcreative practice mutually promote and forge each other. The dissertation is divided into five chapters: Chapter one, the introduction, explains the research motivation, objectives, methods, and theoretical basis, reviewing the aesthetic perspectives of life symbolism in both Eastern and Western contexts; Chapter two focuses on Eastern philosophy and art, discussing how Zhuangzi's thoughts resonate with symbolism and abstract art, presenting the concept of interconnectedness of all things; Chapter three explores the Creative Philosophy: Artistic Embodiment of Zhuangzi’s world; Chapter four returns to the author's creative work, analyzing the techniques, colors, and structures in the allegory, life, and character series, which contain Zhuangzi's ideas and form a philosophical and visual dialogue with Western artists; Chapter five offers a comprehensive discussion, concluding with "The Clown Laughs at Life," symbolizing the transcendence of individual limitations and the realization of life's essence when facing life's contradictions and challenges. This research aims to break the traditional boundaries of form and content in painting, capturing the tension and harmony of life within and beyond through the integration and dialogue of Eastern and Western thoughts, presenting multi-layered meanings of existence. The author hopes to practice the spirit of "immerse"through the guidance of Eastern wisdom, expanding new horizons in the framework of postmodern art.
