Abstract

This study explores integrating traditional persimmon dyeing with the strong visual illusions of Op Art to create unique visual effects and expand design possibilities for dyed products. Using fabric as the medium and brush-dyeing techniques to control clarity and sharpness, four Op Art- inspired bags were developed, aiming to spark innovation through the fusion of tradition and modernity. To improve design efficiency and variation, the open-source language Processing was used to generate patterns, which were then laser-cut into precise stencils for dyeing. The literature review covers persimmon dyeing history and techniques, Op Art development, digital output, laser cutting, and bag material studies. Methodologically, the research included market surveys and preliminary experiments, revealing that current products rarely adopt Op Art and mostly feature large area dyeing or geometric tie-dye. Initial stencil dyeing tests were unsatisfactory, prompting process revisions that led to the final brush-dyeing approach. The outcome features four persimmon-dyed bags with Op Art elements. A questionnaire gathered responses across age and profession, showing: (1) Age and occupation had no significant effect on purchase intention. (2) Style influenced willingness to buy, with Op Art seen as more modern and design-oriented than traditional patterns. This study aims to leverage digital tools to modernize the perception of persimmon dyeing and reposition the craft for contemporary markets.
