Abstract

After the improvement and evolvement over a century, animation has brought the audience distinctive experience from single motion picture in the early stage, hand-drawn frame-to frame animation, to computerized three-dimensional scenes nowadays. This thesis aims at studying silent silhouette animations with the approaches of document collection and case study. From production process such as drawing the characters and scenes, planning on the storyboards and scene-to-scene special effects, the key points and skills are induced and practiced on a selff-made animated short film Lost Memory. Silhouette animations have a long history in European animations. The characters are all in black blacks and the backgrounds are composed in magnificent patterns. Because only the characters’ silhouettes instead of their facial features can be seen, the topics of silhouette animations are usually about mysteries and suspenses. The reseacher chooses nuclear detriments as the notion of creativity, applying the deep and strong image expressions of silhouette animations. The atmosphere and scene designs are filled with a sense of supression, which consists of the fundemental key of this self-made animated short film. In addition, computer graphics are used in an attempt to re-present the simple and unadorned texture of handmade silhouettes.
